Samsung made a surprising new product offering with little fanfare. There was so little fanfare, in fact, that you may have missed it. The company is now selling a staggering 4TB SSD with a 2.5 inch form factor, which means it’s small enough to fit into a laptop.
The only announcement the company made about their new product was a brief print mention in a product fact sheet. At present, very few retailers are offering the device. Even so, the fact that it is for sale at all is noteworthy, and clearly a sign that a wider, large-scale product rollout is pending.
This is not the first time Samsung has managed to wow the tech world with new storage devices. The Evo 850, which launched in the latter part of 2014 and maxed out at 1TB of storage, cost $500 on the day it launched. The drives have significantly decreased in price, making them more attractive for the average user.
The company is also selling a 2TB model, and therein lies the fly in the proverbial ointment where the new 4TB drive is concerned. It comes with a hefty $1500 price tag. For some this will be a turn off, but for those looking for large amounts of storage in a portable form factor, it may be worth it.
Even so, the new drive is big news, and based on past price performance, we can expect that the 4TB drive will see a gradual reduction in price as time passes. At present, it’s not an economical choice, but for a person with limited expansion slots, who’s looking for the biggest drive he can get, this 4TB SSD is simply amazing.
Having said that, it’s obviously not for everyone, but if you’ve got a team that does graphics-heavy work, the new drive will definitely be one to watch.
