Do you use DailyMotion to help get the word out about your company’s brand? It’s a wildly popular video sharing site, and unfortunately, it’s the latest victim in a long list of high-profile hacks in 2016.
LeakedSource, a company that tracks hacks and data breaches across the web, recently acquired more than 80 million DailyMotion usernames and passwords from contacts on the Dark Web.
It is unknown at this time exactly how the company’s firewall was breached, and DailyMotion had taken additional steps to secure passwords and other account information, using a cryptographic algorithm known as Bcrypt.
Unfortunately, this did not prove to be sufficient.
2016 has seen more high-profile hacks than any year in the internet’s history, and if statistics hold, next year will be even bigger.
The bottom line here is that if you use DailyMotion’s video platform in your company’s marketing efforts, you should change your password immediately, or risk having your account compromised.
Worse, if you’re in the habit of using the same password across multiple websites, much more than just that one account could be in danger.
This, of course, highlights a point we’ve covered on numerous occasions: password security. It’s absolutely critical, and a big part of password security is making sure that you’re using a different passwords on every site you visit, and preferably use a password safe for an extra measure of security.
The important thing to remember here is that there’s no ironclad, bullet-proof solution. Hackers are notoriously good at getting around security systems, no matter how robust they might be. Ultimately, the best way to secure yourself and your data is to make yourself a less attractive target than the next person.
While some hackers enjoy the challenge of breaching hard targets, many are happy to pick low-hanging fruit. Make sure you’re not the low-hanging fruit.
